Job Description
Shape safer patient care as a trusted on-site expert
Join STERIS as the front-line advisor hospitals rely on to keep large sterilizer systems clean, compliant, and ready. In this field-based role, you will deliver on-site decontamination services and light maintenance for complex mechanical, electro‑mechanical, and electronic sterilizer units within high-pressure healthcare environments. You will build strong relationships with customers and partner closely with Field Service and contract administration teams to keep operations running smoothly.
A day in the role
- Start: Review your schedule on your company smartphone, coordinate with the Scheduling Team and your Supervisor, and confirm parts, tools, and chemicals are stocked in your company van (which you keep at home).
- On-site: Greet hospital stakeholders, set expectations, and provide proactive updates on service timing, status, and next steps. Act as the first point of contact to drive satisfaction and resolve concerns quickly.
- Decontamination work: Perform chamber cleaning on large sterilizers—replace required chemical ingredients, adjust dosages as needed, monitor the cleaning process and pressures, and maintain/repair chamber cleaning equipment. Handle, transport, and dispose of all chemicals according to safety protocols.
- Troubleshoot: Identify issues with equipment or system components, and consult the appropriate contact (e.g., Field Service partners) for escalation and resolution.
- Documentation: Use your company laptop and software to complete required reports and administrative tasks before planning your next stop.
Where and when you work
- Home base: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
- Territory: South Dakota and North Dakota
- Travel: Very frequent travel, about 50% overall, including approximately 50% overnight travel. Most trips are within a few hours’ drive in your company van; occasional air travel to support other territories.
- Schedule: Full-time with variable shifts (morning/afternoon/night) and some weekend days. A high degree of flexibility is required to meet customer needs.
What you’ll own
- Customer satisfaction as the first point of contact—professional, proactive communication and rapid issue resolution.
- Clear, proactive discussions with customers on preventive cleaning, scheduling, arrival times, service progress, completion, and next steps while fostering rapport with key decision makers.
- Execution of sterilizer chamber cleaning, including chemical changes and adjustments, process monitoring, pressure checks, and upkeep/repair of cleaning equipment with strict adherence to safety procedures.
- Route planning in partnership with the Scheduling Team, your Supervisor, and the Customer to meet coverage and service standards.
- Initial troubleshooting and escalation to the proper contacts for complex equipment or system issues.
- Accurate digital documentation and reporting using a company-issued smartphone, laptop, and software.
- Stewardship of the company vehicle, tools, equipment, supplies, and parts inventory, including timely maintenance and escalation of issues to ensure safe, effective operation.
What you bring
- High School Diploma or GED
- 3+ years of work experience; at least 1 year in a technical or service capacity (e.g., sterile processing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, construction, automotive, etc.). Relevant associate degree, certifications, or military experience may count toward the experience requirement.
- Valid driver’s license
- Flexibility to work outside typical business hours, including overtime and weekends, with up to 50% overnight travel
- Comfort with basic computer skills and smartphone use
- Excellent interpersonal skills and clear customer communication
- Strong organization and problem-solving abilities
- Self-directed work style with minimal supervision
