JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Center for Black Digital Research at Penn State is seeking applications for the position of Senior Coordinator of Digital Archives and Digital Editing, at the rank of Researcher. This is a non-tenure-track, term appointment with a possibility for renewal.

The Senior Coordinator of Digital Archives and Digital Editing plays a central role in the digital curation and digital collection building of archival material in order to bring 19th-century Black organizing to digital life.

The person in this position will be part of the Scholarly Editing Team, working with directors of the Colored Conventions Project and Douglass Day to make publicly accessible the archival material of Mary Ann Shadd Cary and Frances E. W. Harper, key 19th century figures of the Center for Black Digital Research's (CBDR) scholarly agenda.

This person will be the project manager of CBDR's Mary Ann Shadd Cary materials to ensure transcriptions are accurate, useful, and ready to share with the many audiences and readers. This person will also co-pilot the digital collection building of Frances E. W. Harper materials by assisting with the cataloging and organizing of identified archival holdings.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Evaluating plain-text files against digitized facsimiles of the original document to ensure accuracy, and editing as necessary
  • Ensuring each transcription meets the Scholarly Editing Team's editorial standards
  • Conducting transcribing of Mary Ann Shadd Cary materials that are complex and/or challenging to read
  • Identifying materials that need re-digitization or magnification and coordinating with archival institutions to request new scans. This may include travel to meet in-person to view originals and facilitate partnerships
  • Collaborate with the Director of Digital Archives to develop a system and process for tracking Frances E. W. Harper archival material, permissions and rights, and digitization status
  • Participate in the Center for Black Digital Research's meetings, events, and trainings

Required Qualifications : A Master's degree, or equivalent, in historical studies or related field with an emphasis in 19th-century African American history and/or women's history by the date of the appointment. Must have experience with digital content management. Ability to communicate effectively with partners and institutions. Demonstrated experience in archival research (online and in-person). Project management experience and comfort working with spreadsheets and content management systems (i.e., Google Drive, WordPress, and Omeka). Must be able to read cursive handwriting, interpret details, and transcribe textual material.

Experience using and training others on transcription tools (i.e., Zooniverse) is a plus.

In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.
