LOCATION: History Center - 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102

COMPENSATION: Typical starting range $76,640.00 - $95,800.00

STATUS & HOURS: Full-time, regular (approximately 2,080 annual hours) position.

DESCRIPTION: This position exists to provide overall management and professional administration of the Minnesota Historical Society’s security and safety across the network. The Security Manager is responsible for security and safety measures for over 150 buildings and 34 locations across the state. The Security Manager leads security planning and development, infrastructure requirements, procedures, training, staff selection and supervision, and budget, in line with the policies and procedures of the Minnesota Historical Society.

SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Plan, direct and manage statewide MNHS security, fire/life safety, and risk programs providing safety and security to MNHS visitors, staff, collections and buildings throughout the State of Minnesota; 2) Ensure current disaster recovery and emergency response programs, plans, business continuity plans, and incident command structures are in place for statewide properties and museums as well as detailed internal audit and assessment tools and analysis; 3) Utilize security, safety, and risk data to recommend and provide input to planning, evaluation, and testing of new and existing security systems, technology, and devices at all museums and historic properties; 4) Identify emerging risks and determine appropriate mitigation that is relevant, effective, and integrated into operations; 5) Foster a positive and inclusive culture of security and risk; and 6)Provide recommendations and support to the MNHS Policy Program in the development, approval, and maintenance of policy documents; provide direction and consistency in the protection of property, assets, and people.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

  • Eight years managing security and safety leadership, museum operations, business administration, or related management experience, including supervising staff.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when needed, including evenings and weekends and being on-call.

  • Ability to work in an environment where the air quality may contain dust, mold or other airborne particles.

  • Required to lift and carry files and objects up to 20 pounds independently.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to MNHS sites across the state.

  • Ability to develop and manage a departmental budget for both daily operational expenses and multi-year capital planning.

  • Ability to compose written instructions and/or review operational manuals.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legalities of security use of force and detaining suspects.

  • AED, CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to earn certification within 30 days of employment.

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with a wide range of people; demonstrated ability to work as a part of a complex and integrated team.

  • Communication, both orally and written, including preparing and delivering reports and presentations.

  • Gathering data, analyzing, and organizing information into action plans.

  • Computer skills, specifically Google applications.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Project management principles.

  • Minnesota History and MNHS programming.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Project management experience.

  • Knowledge of preservation, maintenance, and security methods for historic structures, grounds, and cultural landscapes.

  • National certification (e.g., Certified Institutional Protection Manager, Certified Protection Professional, Certified Fraud Examiner, Physical Security Professional) in a security related field.

  • Participation in recognized professional trade associations (IFCPP, ASIS International, IFPO, etc.)

  • Previous security, law enforcement, or military experience.

  • Experience with investigating criminal activity and coordination with local law enforcement.

  • Experience working with historical and/or cultural properties organizations.

  • Previous De-escalation training.

  • Five+ years of experience providing direct supervision of security officers

  • Experience designing and developing standards for electronic security systems.

  • Experience with conducting physical surveys and developing a comprehensive plan for applying best security practices to reduce vulnerabilities of a facility.

  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of multiple security systems and their proper application, including intrusion detection, access control, video surveillance and emergency/safety alert systems.

  • Experience with managing contracts for physical security officers and electronic security system installations and maintenance.
