Patient Safety Sitter - PRN- Days Vary

Education / Experience:


High School Graduate or GED certificate preferred.


Completion of Patient Safety Sitter class and HIPAA Compliance class upon hire.


Outstanding communication, listening, and observation skills required.


Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stressful and emergency situations required.


Ability to read, write, perform simple mathematical calculations, and follow written and verbal instruction required.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain continuous visual contact with the patient at all times, remaining alert and observant.
  • Intervene verbally to prevent the patient from falling and/or pulling at tubes/drains/lines.
  • Provide patients with emotional support.
  • Refrain from performing additional, unauthorized functions.
  • Alert nursing staff when the patient needs help.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Adhere to relevant policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ensure you are positioned in the assigned patient's room to maintain constant visual observation.
  • Ensure patient is never alone or out of sight unless instructed otherwise by the nurse.
  • Will receive a verbal report from the nurse regarding what to look out for, what to report, and to whom.
  • Maintain accurate and legible records as required by the hospital patient safety sitter policy.
  • Maintain the patient's privacy and confidentiality at all times as required by local, state, and federal laws.
  • Communicate to the healthcare team any patient requests, complaints, needs, problems or potential risks to the patient or others.

  • Maintain compassionate and professional at all times and when exposed to patients in high emotional distress.
  • Outstanding communication, listening and observation skills for interaction with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians and other hospital personnel.
  • Ability to respond swiftly.
  • Professional appearance and proficient personal hygiene.
  • Calm, confident manner.
  • Undeterred by distressed or combative patients.
  • Typical shifts are in 2-4 hour increments and coverage will be needed all hours including weekends, holidays and nights.
  • Basic problem solving skills for effective problem and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stressful and emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, write, perform simple mathematical calculations, and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Complete annual education requirements.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wear identification while on duty.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.
  • Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices.
  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and in-services as needed.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

  • Sitting for extended periods of time (up to 4 hour intervals)
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop and reach/lift above your head, without any assistive devices.
  • Must be able to read documentation in a variety of formats such as in print and electronically.
  • Must be able to hear adequately enough in order to clearly communicate with others and use communication devices such as telephones must be able to hear patients, alarms, call bells, etc.
  • Maintains mental and emotional stability, using a courteous and calm approach in all contacts with patients, visitors and healthcare team members.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds or more.
  • Have near normal hearing - able to hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice/ webinars
  • Have near normal vision - clarity of vision (both near and far) either corrected on non-corrected, ability to distinguish colors
  • Have good manual dexterity and eye-hand-foot coordination
  • Standing - continuously within the shift (67-100%)
  • Walking - continuously within the shift (67-100%)
  • Climbing - occasionally within the shift (1-33%)
  • Bending/stooping - frequently within the shift (34-66%)
  • Twist at the waist - occasionally with the shift (1-33%)
  • Pushing/pulling - frequently within the shift (34-66%)
  • Lift/carry - 20lbs with assistance - occasionally within the shift (1-33%)
  • Reaching above the shoulders - frequently within the shift (34-67%)
  • Lift/carry - 50lbs with assistance - occasionally within the shift (1-33%).
