Description Your role at GEI. GEI's Appleton, WI; Green Bay, WI; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; or Duluth MN offices are seeking an On-Call Biologist for the 2025 field season. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in natural history, ecology, or environmental science and will be comfortable working in a variety of field conditions. They will safely use and maintain equipment, vehicles included fleet trucks, ATVs UTS, boats, kayaks, hand and power tools, and will use technology (GPS, field tablets, computer) to execute and document activities. This position requires an introductory level of skill and experience. Projects will involve field labor and technical knowledge/work. The candidate will assist mid- and senior-level staff and work in teams with peers for new and existing clients and project work supporting both office and field tasks. This individual must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively with a project team of ecologists, environmental scientists, and engineers. Work may include wetland delineations, terrestrial botanical surveys, aquatic plant surveys, threatened and endangered species surveys, soil health assessments and other ecological field studies. Work may also include assisting with ecosystem restoration and enhancement implementation, construction monitoring, and development of work and safety plans. In-state and occasional out-of-state travel may be necessary, primarily in the Midwest. Essential Responsibilities & Duties Assist with wetland delineations, botanical surveys, threatened and endangered species surveys and other terrestrial ecological field investigations Assist with aquatic resource investigations including aquatic plant surveys, water quality investigations, benthic and fisheries surveys, sediment sampling and other aquatic ecological or limnological investigations. Collect field data and enter data into appropriate spreadsheets. Assist with GPS surveying efforts and prepare GIS maps. Safely operate, maintain, and trailer motorized boats and kayaks. Operate and assist with maintenance, calibration, decontamination, and upkeep of aquatic sampling equipment. Work under physically demanding conditions in variable weather and sometimes difficult terrain. Prepare Work Plans and Health and Safety Plans. Traveling throughout Wisconsin and adjacent states, likely including multiple nights per week out of town working at remote locations and to work irregular hours (30-55 hours per week, with overtime pay for more than 40 hours a week). Preparing and contributing to reports and other project-related documents. Having a commitment to safety for yourself and others. Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing or having already obtained a B.S. in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, Aquatic Sciences or related discipline. Experience with botany, fisheries, or wildlife surveys. Valid U.S. Driver's license. Must be comfortable working in and around water both via wading and in a vessel. Experience and level of comfort with safely operating, maintaining, and trailering motorized boats and kayaks. Obtain and maintain boater safety education certification or have it already (GEI requires boater safety course be completed every five years). Willingness and ability to travel on short-term assignments with overnight travel as needed. High comfort level conducting field work under varying field and weather conditions. Strong verbal and technical writing skills, collaboration, and communication skills. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Team player, self-starter, and confident personality. Desired Qualifications Experience with water quality sampling and common analyses. Standard First Aid and CPR training Wisconsin's Individual Commercial Pesticide Applicator License - 5.0 Aquatics & Mosquito and 6.0 Right of Way and Natural Areas Ability to identify native and non-native plant and animal species.
