Job Description

Superintendent – Heavy Civil Construction

Location: Detroit, MI

Salary: $100,000 – $120,000 per year

Type: Full-Time | On-site

About the Opportunity:

Client is a fast-growing self-perform union contractor seeking a highly skilled Superintendent to lead field operations on infrastructure and civil construction projects. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in fast-paced environments and has experience managing field teams, trades, and equipment — not just subcontractors.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary: $100K–$120K
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including:
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Retirement Plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)

Role Summary

The Superintendent will oversee daily jobsite activities with a strong focus on schedule, safety, labor productivity, and cost control. You'll interface directly with project managers and internal departments to drive self-performed work and ensure smooth coordination across all phases of the project. You’ll play a pivotal role in planning and executing work with a sharp eye on budgeting, cost tracking, and labor efficiency — adjusting in real time to protect margins and stay ahead of issues that could delay timelines or increase expenses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead field operations across multiple project sites or a large-scale project
  • Manage self-perform crews and subcontractors, including labor planning, productivity, and safety
  • Monitor and control project budgets , labor hours, and cost performance to mitigate risks
  • Create and adjust schedules, coordinating with PMs and Engineers
  • Conduct inspections to ensure quality, safety, and code compliance
  • Manage site logistics, including materials, equipment usage, and maintenance
  • Lead daily huddles, weekly trade meetings, and all project documentation
  • Support procurement, equipment selection, and formwork planning
  • Collaborate with mechanics and logistics to ensure equipment uptime and efficiency
  • Participate in change order negotiations and owner/architect meetings
  • Assist with preconstruction planning and post-project closeout

What You Bring

Experience

  • 5+ years of field construction experience
  • 3+ years in a supervisory/leadership role
  • Background in self-perform operations, preferably in small to mid-sized firms where multitasking across roles is essential

Technical Skills

  • Budget/cost tracking and project financials
  • Strong scheduling and project management tools (e.g., MS Office, construction management software)
  • Knowledge of labor productivity, field operations, and equipment management
  • Familiarity with Lean principles (preferred)

Education & Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred)
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor environments
  • May involve travel and/or relocation depending on project needs
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet critical deadlines
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, and pulling
